Podiobooks goes Boing!
One of my favourite sources for free audio books (well, donation ware...) has been having some bandwidth problems recently.
Nevertheless, I have enjoyed many fine books while tweaking images and even programming (I find that once I know the programming language it is possible to program and listen at the same time - OK, I miss some bits but that's what the rewind button is for...) - jut check out the podbook roll on the menu there on the right (scroll down a bit...)
Unfortunately, SeƱor Doctorow linked to an encomium'd podiobook and the BoingBoing effect has done the predictable.
Podiobooks, once on the ropes is now down and out for the count.
Hopefully they will be back on-line before too long!
Maybe we should suggest that Cory adds a note that Podiobooks and their authors (who get 75% of everything donated) need some support to buy fatter and longer pipes!

We're working like monkeys on crack to get the site back up, believe me. :) It's almost there. Just waiting on the registrar...

Fat and long pipes are on the way!
Actually, we were in the middle of a less-than-perfect move when Cory linked us. All should be resolved in about 12 hours. And then just to test that theory, I'm going to post a podiobook version of one of Cory's books in a few days. That ought to get another BB link and a full-on stress test for us!

Life spent registering for ghosts. In a bush.
Joy!
Rapture!
I am turgid! (it was the Dictionary.com word of the day - had to use it somewhere...)
Eno and Byrne have released selected songs from the seminal 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts; as complete multitracks.
Fabjulous!
I'd love to get my hands on these puppies, but I have one problem.
I can't register on the site. That fantabulous, craptabulando, borked, junkfest of a an excuse for a website.*
Can you?
Try it now - its a fun game for all the music lovers in your life - keep them frustrated for hours!
Dont get me started on how crap the WHOLE login process is...
Note*: Its made of flash**
Note**: Dave in 2001 (A space oddessy) famously said 'Its made of stars'. If the monolith had been coded using flash he would likely have been saying - 'err.. I'm not sure where to click next or what I just clicked - its made of flash...'***
Note***: cue blinky lights (flash is for the frontal-lobally challenged) Look! Pretty pictures! Bouncy Balls! Wheeeee!!

Ok.
So I didnt quite make it. I have two designs that I am futzing around with and one of them will be live tonight.
Honest.
But at this stage I would have to admit defeat - two days just wasnt enough time, especially as I hadnt a notion what to do in setting out!
I think for us slackers they should have a May 2nd (or 3rd) CSS Reboot :)
I have now set a reminder in backpack to give me some notice for November!

DMCA double or quits and Software Patents
Did you see the US are planning to increase the breadth of the DMCA - including more offenses, higher fines and doubling the jail terms for offenders. It is now illegal just to download software that MAY be used to break copyright.
Farewell fair use.
This is all pushed by the same company that has just decided to sue a family for illegal file sharing - a family that does not even own a computer!
I would love to think that the EU and our own glorious government will not follow in their footsteps but unfortunately our MEP's are staunch supporters of big business. I remember seeing some footage of the recent software patent debates in the EU Parliment with Mary Harney obfuscating, bullying and generally ramming through software patents.
Software patents are a BAD bad idea. If someone sits down and thinks up some new way of doing something with software - clicking on a link to pop-up an IM window for instance - they can get a patent for it. The important thing is they never have to develop this functionality or even give some technical basis for how it might work. The idea is patented and patents are given for ideas that have prior art.
What this means that if some hard-working chap builds a company and implements an idea that is demonstratably similar to the patent then they can be sued and forced to pay costs, fines and licence fees. Poor hard working chap goes out of business. Everybody who works for him loses their job. Entropy increases.
Most of the software patents are held by big companies - either filed by them or bought out by them. These companies have the money to pay patent lawyers to search existing applications (ie. from the dawn of the internet), or newly developed applications or whatever with the goal of prosecuting all offenders.
Entropy will increase sometime soon near you.

How to topple a giant?
I wonder if there are any anti-Microsoft hackers out there?
Of course there are! what am I saying...
I mean, I have a proposal for them - how to kill (or at least severly undermine) the release of IE7.
Save up all your exploits, hacks, and what have you until IE7 is fully mature then release them all at once, or even better one at a time not releasing the next until the previous exploit has been patched.
That way everyone realises what a piece of crap IE really is and follows the advice of all those in the know and migrate from IE to Firefox, Opera, tin cans and string - anything but IE.
You know it makes sense!

Temptation in China
China is one of the biggest untapped (semi-tapped...) markets in the world. Companies stand to make a lot of money by providing products and services to Chinese people.
Online services will gain much through subscription fees, advertising revenue etc. Yahoo has made the leap, Google has made the leap.
The unfortunate part of all this is that the Chinese government are draconian in their methods of dealing with 'subversives'. Any company that provides services in China must do so according to the rules of the Chinese government.
Last year the Chinese government asked Yahoo to reveal the secret profile details of a subscriber to their services. Yahoo did so which resulted in a chinese journalist being jailed for ten years.
Doesnt sound so bad until you look at what the journalist is meant to have done. He shared a summary of a Chinese Communist Party directive with foreign sources. The directive had warned of possible unrest during the anniversary of the June 4 Movement - commemorating the Tianamen square massacre and associated events.
Yahoo had the choice - dont share the information and face penalties or at worst expulsion from the Chinese market but save a man from spending 10 years in prison or share the information, keep your profits and dont rock the boat. Bad choice Yahoo - You have now earned the ire of Amnesty International
Google has just recently come under fire for kowtowing to Chinas demands regarding censorship. I happen to trust Google a lot more than I do Yahoo. They have made mostly common sense decisions. Some of the non-issues for me were the scanning of Gmail and the insertion of context sensitive adverts. No human intervention, no storing of details - fine.
Google has to be asked the question - what price 10 years of a mans life? Would Google follow their creed of 'dont be evil' and face reprimands form the Chinese government. Would they do the right thing?

Is Google now Evil?
Google has just announced that it plans to roll out a version of Google for China. This special version is tailor made so that the chinese government can censor all search results so that they dont contain any reference to counter-revolutionary topics such as the Tianamen Square massacre, real history, etc.. Also not included are blogging, email and other such tools.
Apparently the company went through 'an excruciating internal debate' but finally decided, in the words of Andrew McLaughlin, senior policy counsel, "We firmly believe, with our culture of innovation, Google can make meaningful and positive contributions to the already impressive pace of development in China."
To the hard core this sounds like Google is selling out. To me it sounds like hey are trying to change the system from the inside. OK, again for the purists this is doomed to fail as you never achieve the goal you set out to achieve. The final result is a compromise.
What the purists miss though, is that the other side needs to compromise also. Even a small advance would make a big difference for freedom of speech in China. And who knows what abuses of the Google API will be slipped under the Radar by those clever Chinese hackers.
Opportunity.
So are Google now evil? Nah, they may have done a deal with the devil, but the devil doesn't know what's ahead for it. Nobody does - we are talking about technology here, who knows what the next innovation will bring. It could well bring WiFi through gravity waves, or entanglement 'spooky action' based communication devices that make distance no obstacle. By then the Chinese people will notice if their internet gets taken away and they won't take bullshit answers anymore.

Saving the Internet
Just started to read this incredibly eye and mind opening article by Doc Searls. In it he outlines the problems that the future of the Internet will face - not the usual geekery such as running out of IP numbers or accomodating extended character sets or handling micropayments etc. Worse than that. You know all that copper and optic fibre that the Internet runs through? You know the Telco's who own all that copper and fibre? Well, soon they will (yes, will) essentially start charging tolls to whoever wants to use their wires.
Think about it. Who would they charge first? Your service provider. You think they are going to soak up the costs? You will get charged.
That is only the common man, people who surf the net, send emails to one another and maybe even blog or share some photos. In other words non-commercial use.
Imagine your business was online. oh boy, the Telcos are drooling at this stage.
read the article - I'm only a fraction of the way through and it has already scared the pants off me.
Doc Searls - Saving the Internet

Doc Searls
I'll be curious to hear how you react to the last section, which is about how we think and talk about the Net. Because I believe the first battles we need to win are in our own minds. What is it, exactly, that we're trying to save?
That's the deepest question. And the hardest to answer.
The telcos and cablecos know their answer already: a system of pipes, which they own. And they have the legislators in their pockets arlready.
Mark
What is it, exactly, that we're trying to save?
Good question. Good question.
One of the main problems with humanitarians and liberals (is that still a drity word?) is that they have no set agenda and as such are constantly reactive where other interested and - for want of a better description - more partisan individuals have a very clear idea of what they want, who is standing in their way, what problems will arise and how far they will go to deal with them.
The same goes for the web. No user has a clear idea of what it is they expect from the web, if you asked them they would probably just reply - "I don't know email/instant messaging and stuff".
For me its definitely a nascent worldwide community of some kind. Hopefully.
This one needs some deep thought.

Killer caught through blog entry
A young man and his sister were robbed and murdered by the girls ex boyfriend.
The guy was caught because the brother made this blog entry shortly before he died.
Heres the background
The murder itself is brutal and shocking but made more so by the banality of the entry. The realisation that the young man was just persuing an ordinary day.
That banality highlights the brutality of the murderer - you wonder how he managed to do it, realise that he would have had to dehumanise his targets (remember the girl was his ex) greeting them, bantering, dropping hints about what he wanted and finally forcing himself to become enraged and following that line of thought becomes impossible for us.

I particularly like the one of the guy shooting up on top of his friends headstone. Or the one of the baby asleep on a pile of guns and money, or....

Web link bar codes for mobile phones
Semacodes. Very nearly a real world hyperlink!
This is a great idea. You know the way it takes ages to type in anything on your mobile device whether it is a WAP enabled mobile phone or a whatever. This technology allows you to instantly snap a picture of a 2D barcode and using installed software it will redirect to the URL stored in the barcode. rilliant. Simple. No fuss.
Huh? Well instead of printing URL's that have to be typed in it is almost like clicking a link on a web page except in the real world.

Forgiveness
The forgiveness project works with grassroots organisations in Northern Ireland, England, South Africa and all around the world, working in the area of reconcilliation, victim support and conflict resolution.
Read some of the stories. They are powerful tales of people forgiving those who destroyed their lives either through torture or through murdering a loved one.
All the tales speak of the victims releasing themselves from a 'cage of hatred'. Valuable lesson to be learned there.....

Ernie ball
Ernie Ball, the guitar string making company (plus accessories), were the poster child for Microsofts crackdown on software licensing. Aparently the problem arose for Ernie ball after the company upgraded its machines and shifted the old machines 'down the chain'. The machines were never reformatted so there were copies of Office, some design tools and the like still on the machines. Now the majority of this software was not being used by the inheritors of the PC's.
Microsoft came in to audit their software, based on the licenses that Ernie Ball already had. Microsoft uncovered the unlicensed software (as they knew they would) and threw the book at Ernie Ball. I think they eventually had to pay Micro$oft a million dollars and they had their name dragged through the courts and the press, the whole nine yards. They were made an example.
http://news.com.com/2008-1082-5065859.html
So Ernie ball decides to switch to Linux. Open source software the whole way, design packages, office software, accounting software. Everything open source. He saved a lot of money and raised the profitability and productivity of the company as there were reduced IT costs etc.
Now enter SCO. It is threatening lawsuits (and has started handing them out) on anyone who uses Linux software. Why? Because SCO says that Linux contains elements of its copyright software within it - I think mainly internet communication protocols and the like - pretty low level stuff, and pervasive.
http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3320401
Wouldnt it be a kick in the teeth if SCO launched a law suit against Ernie Ball for copyright infringement? Where would they go next?

March of comrade crab
Q. How do you deal with an invasion of huge crabs?
A. Eat them!
These brutes apparently were brought into Russia by Stalin to provide food for Norht Western Russians. There was a population explosion in the early 90's and now the crabs are migrating down the coasts of Norway. Having no natural predators means the crabs thrive.
Their legs are apparently a delicacy though, fetching $15 per pound. A single leg is enough to provide a filling meal for a grown man!

Colour Schemes
Hmm. Interesting. Some of the schemes suggested by this are hideous and others are harmonious. I presume the same algorithm for selecting colours is used no matter what base colour you choose, so I wonder why some schemes are harmonious and others are not?
I found the schemes that had pastel elements were the nicest. The bold primary colours mostly didnt work for me.

Dunderheads
I had to set up web and email hosting for a friend recently.
I contacted the hosting provider, gave them all the details, contact addresses etc. Now when you set up hosting such as this you have three contacts - administrative, technical and business. The administrative and business contact was my friend, I was the technical contact.
When the hosting is setup, you receive full details of how to connect to the new service, setup your email, your FTP details, admin password etc. Now you would think that those details would be sent to the technial contact. NO. They were sent to the administrtion contact.
The only problem with that was her contact email address was her new email account that she had just opened. Which is fine. Except that the details that allow her to access her email have just been sent to her email. Yes, the keys were securely locked inside the car.
Many faxes and a disturbing phone call or two later (after which I really did consider changing my name by deed poll to Yossarian) all was sorted out.
I think I owe them my first born though....

KPMG theme music
I presume when you enter the hallowed halls of KPMG (or whatever they call themseleves now, although I do think a name change due to silly music is a BIT extreme...) that this little ditty will eb playing in the elevator.
http://www.5thpercentile.com/kpmg/kpmg.mp3
I love it. The lilting melody, the soaring pseudo-nationalism of the lyrics, the striving for, for, for something more than we experience in this mundane world. Truly KPMG is a company with vision,a future, they know things I dont.
And thats good enough for me.
I think this utopia needs to be fucked up in some way. We all know that John Morgan is doing his bit as we speak, making sure that incompetents around the country are kept on the payroll of Ireland Inc. (© Sav industries 2004).
Sing it with me now!!.... We are KPMG we have a dream of power and energy we go for the gold, together we hold onto our vision of love of strategy.
I can see some great titles and songs for companies / countries :
ESB - 'Your lights and heat are your privelege, You know we charge by the hour, If you dont want a dark village, pay up or we'll cut off your power'
Vodaphone - 'phone a friend once a month for a ransom, we love to talk about the coverage you dont get, you may be smart, well paid and handsome, but when you get your bill we'll make sure its not met'
Sukis all night bang bang lap dancing emporium and chess club - 'you make some moves with your chubby bishop, with dreams of taking our defenceless queen, but dont forget we all come from south-east Asia, where the chop-chop joints are seldom (if ever) clean'
Ah sure, you get the message - best title and chorus gets a free cocktail in a bar of my choice :)

This is your artist on Acid
A mate of mine, Dave Grogan, sent me this. As he says 'this rocks!'

from the artict:
'Outlines seem normal, but very vivid - everything is changing colour. My hand must follow the bold sweep of the lines. I feel as if my consciousness is situated in the part of my body that's now active - my hand, my elbow... my tongue'.

I wonder what happened to the artists career after this? It seems from his comments that it was a very draining experience and his perceptions seemed blunted and his enthusiasm robbed after the effects wore off. I have this terrible image of the poor guy never being able to draw or paint again....

All the recommendations it gave me so far seem to be spot on. I like the ones it suggested:
Y tu mama tambien - which I have actually been meaning to rent for ages now
The secretary - James Spader, gotta love him, I think hes beginning to get type-cast as a sex object though - I once sold a book to him in Hodges Figgis. Never let on that I knew who he was until I was handing back his change saying 'thanks James, loved you in Crash'. The look on his face was priceless.
Deadalive (Braindead) - hmm. Not sure about this one. I'll rent it anyway and see...
Hable Con Ella (Talk to her) - I had heard the name but dont know nothing about it...
and...
American Psycho. I think this is the first incorrect suggestion here, just from reports I've heard of it. I might watch it anyway.

American psycho is actually quite good. Christian Bale (who is playing the next batman in batman:intimidation), is wonderfull as the 80's icon of dismemberment and misplaced rage.
It is an interesting companion piece for the excellent "rules of attraction" which involves christian's younger brother Sean (played excellently by Dawson Creek's James Vanderbeak)

Kuroshin
Hey whats wrong with MovableType?
Kuroshin (by the way the 'S' key is in between the A and the D and if you dont have one on your keyboard I'd be happy to send you the $10 it would cost to get a new one - although that would probably be a stoopid keyboard used by most other people so its not cool, or uses too many clock cycles of the on-board microprocessor to deal with each keystroke, or allows strangers to type on your computer {or friends even!} )
Kuro5hin rant about Movable Type
Hey since we are talking stpid analogies if a murderer uses a knife to kill someone it does not mean that I'm a murderer when I butter a piece of bread with a knife. Ha! You see I dont even eat bread! or drink Latte, or use iMacs, and hey amnt I just proving your point? Lazy sonofa - go prove your own point! I have to write about deflossing my teeth!
Go stick your blogboard up your a-blog!
And heres the best picture I could find of me being 'pensive'

I would have to say that Kuroshin has cast the dragons teeth upon the earth to bring forth his Myrmidons, but he will find that they turn on him instead!
p.s. anyone whoi hasnt realised - this is a flame, and a bad one, probably a lame flame? ok - still sick. Also you WILL have to read Kuro5hin's original post to understand what the hell I'm going on about... anyway, like I said later.
Why am I writing like people actually look at this blog?

Gradual Biological changes to buzzwords
This is scary. Georgia (U.S.) is banning use of the word 'evolution' in classrooms, claiming it is a 'buzzword'. The reason they are doing this is because of pressure from parents.
Typical reaction from conservatives when they are threatened. If they allow children to think for themselves they will of course immediately start sniffing cocaine, drinking non-stop and shagging rings around themselves before OD'ing, drying out and blaming it all on their parents. Better to shield the from all this allowing them to grow up as carbon copies of the parents, secure in the knowledge that their view of the world is the only view.
Whats this about calling evolution 'gradual biological changes over time'. That makes it sound like the world has just hit puberty, and you know what that means. Soon the world will be caught french kissing saturn or pushing mercury off orbit just to see how long it takes to plummet into the sun. Oh yes, puberty is a much safer way to describe evolution.

Supersize me!
This looks like the blockbuster for the summer! The director Morgan Spurlock decided to try to survive on nothing but McDonalds for a month and have it filmed for that time. He had a team of doctors checking him over to make sure he wouldnt keel over. The results were disastrous. His whole system was badly affected, high cholestrol, bad skin, general illness and lethargy, loss of sex drive, and vomiting. Brave man. I hope its in the IFI cinema before too long!
