Psionics
If we ever develop psychic powers we are in for a world of pain.
Hopefully, most people will have some morals, some sense of decorum, some idea of what it is to be a gentleman - hopefully all our psychic battles will take place in some airy, transubstantial realm and the pain visited on us by failure will be transitory, confusing and ultimately confusing. This won't last long. We hope.
Soon after we learn the secret of fire (so to speak), we will be trying to fry each others brains with the power of pure thought. Each interaction we have will be on that level and we will have to climb the greasy pole of mutual understanding. And we will do it. We have all read Neromancer after all and the one thing that society needs is a shared vision.
As soon as we achieve some sort of stability some low-class joker will transport us two miles in the air and hope that we can't figure out how to counteract possible third degree burns from re-entry severe lacerations from the sudden stop that will happen when we hit the ground (as my da always said - its not the fall that kills you, its the sudden stop at the end)
Soon this finessing will lead to transporting bricks (above the heads of the 'gifted') and the stifling of anyt truly independent movement to ratify a unanimous direction for any possible insurgent psychic force.
Forget about the amazing capabilities of a mind equped with matter transporters and the software to make the management of such things a reality.
Do you really think your weekend city escapes make sense without you bringing back artifacts of something oder, something less forgiving.
Try it, if you don't get eaten then - bonus!!
